What more could you ask for? Seen it in the cinema and have since bought the blu-ray. A keeper. Enough said. A really good ww2 story. It's a very suspenseful film with lots of twists in the story.
Very enjoyable but not a gung ho bullets and explosions film. The picture and sound is very good and the dialogue is clear as well.
Well worth a viewing. This was a very easy way to spend 2 hours on a wet afternoon or Sunday evening. Very slick and stylish - the 'look and feel' of the movie was excellent with stunning set pieces, costumes and locations.
It was almost too polished when you consider that a world war was actually taking place, there was a distinct lack of grit and grime, especially in the London sets IMO.
The plot was a very good one full of romance, deception, espionage and glamour but it just was kind of rushed through with loads of plot holes in the timelines etc.
I also felt no connection between the two leads at all, I have always found Marion Cotillard very cold and distanced in movies and with Pitt there was no real spark between them, just two very good actors going through the motions.
So in conclusion this film is more style over content, pretty lightweight but will satisfy most who just need a few hours escapism with Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard wrapped up in a period piece looking fantastic.
After reading the reviews a film I thought looked good from the trailer did not have the best reviews!
But it just goes to show don't always listen to everyone else because I really enjoyed it!! If you think the trailer looks good go for it.
What we have here is a spy vs spy is he or isn't he, or is she or isn't she? Brad Pitt does his usual charming tough guy routine and plays the emotions to a T as does Marion Cotillard the dazzling French actress who killed the Piaf role Academy Award wise in La Vie en Rose, the latter being a real must see.
There's good chemistry between them but there's not a lot in the plot except a completely unrealistic twist which demands too much of suspension of disbelief.
So what could have been a real heart strings tugger if the plot had played it a little less unbelievable, leaves one with a bit of 'Whaaa?
In short a yeoman's work and not one for the film making history books. But still a good yarn as yarns go. And if you love any take on WWII, even though there are man many more superior films out there on that subject just as an example Run Silent Run Deep if you are into submarines..
Well produced, great sets, good costumes, scores well on the visual level and entertains in the main. On the downside it is a rather simple story, the end is telegraphed in advance, but, the main problem is, it is not interesting enough to justify the length of the film, could be an hour shorter and deliver a punchy fast paced drama that held the interest more.
Stunningly made film from the beginning. I thought it did settle down though a bit later but this was justified, I later felt, as it seemed to be made in the style in which films of that period were made.
