Written by Walt Disney Pictures. Steve Jobs remade Apple, embedding a very specific philosophy. Usually called 'design,' the idea is simple and the goal is simple.
Have a vision of what you want to accomplish, a clear vision. Then engineer to that vision, ruthlessly eliminating all else. It sounds simple, but no Apple competitor has been able to emulate the approach; it is usual to start with a list of features and jam as many in as you can.
Jobs had far less work to do with Pixar because they started as an engineering shop and ended up making movies.
The stories are effective because they are carefully engineered, based not initially on intuition, but on the science such as it is of narrative dynamics.
As Pixar matured, they started to engineer the cinematic techniques as well. Now Pixar is part of the Disney machine, and Disney has a princess franchise to feed, and I am sure that a very specific set of goals was supplied to Pixar to engineer to.
So we have the story and the rather blunt girl-mother issues that apparently have market traction. You, dear viewer, will be in their scope and satisfied with the engineered results or not.
I don't care much about that. What I do appreciate is the parallel engineering, the cinematic engineering.
Pixar in the past has been experimenting with space, particularly the position occupied by the camera and the space that is defined around it.
Lots of consideration of dimension that gives something like a visual score. Sometimes it directly supports the goals of the story; sometimes it does so indirectly by just making the images more enticing.
I think what they did here is fascinating. The spatial experiments are muted, at least the space occupied by the action.
Instead, the space around the chief character's head is engineered, no doubt using proprietary motion technology. As a matter of hidden history, the technique of using linear NURBS to define things like hair came directly from military aircraft radiation modeling for stealth.
But that is another story. They are characters in their own filmworld. The more glum I got over the story-in- front, the more joy I was able to find in what they did with this hair.
Some of the individual curls work against the assembly just as Merida works against her constraints. The personality of each of the tufts remains the same throughout the film, but the nature of the agentworld of the tufts develops.
Because they have to emphasize the hair, they de-emphasize hair elsewhere. For instance, the bearhides are from a bygone technology.
The snow that originally would have used the same technology and echoed the hair dynamics would have made a great film.
But 'creative differences' and a shift in the director killed this. Red hair in cinema has a long history, and it can be said that film at least clarified certain stereotypes.
I have a small project tracing the development from "It! Many actresses were forced to dye their hair just so the filmstock would register their skin properly.
By then we had the three main archetypes. Merida has a rare double swirl. Fantastic research on that account.
So, an engineered hairworld, as a collection of characters, acting as a character to subvert the Disney constraints.
Too bad about the original visionary leaving. Jobs would not have allowed it. Release date. Running time. Main article: Brave soundtrack.

Ein wirklich netter Film. In fact I'm very pleased that Disney went for an authentic Scottish script that didn't overemphasise any stereotypes although they had to have a Prinz Charles Berlin gag in there. Anyway, please get this film for your kids and for yourself, it's a great story with a stunning look and will be one to watch again and again. Lucy Fandrych. February 9, Full Review…. May 24, Full Review…. View All Critic Reviews 6. Mar 11, Depp's film was subsequently panned severely by critics.
To this day the film has been buried and forgotten. Not many people are even aware of the film's existence, except for die-hard film buffs and epicentres of Depp devotion.
One will unquestionably find it taxing to unearth a copy of this film. It was released on DVD, but limited copies were distributed.
Now you'll only find the DVD floating around on eBay or other online stores if you're lucky. If you ask me, this is a true pity. It's admirably unconventional and gripping, with a brutal sense of reality permeating every scene.
The film's depiction of the American Indian community is unflinching. Instead of creating a feel-good film, Depp directed a deeply depressing, emotive and powerful drama that deserves much more acclaim and attention.
The story is derived from Gregory McDonald's novel of the same name. This is a sincere and touching story that poignantly explores themes of bravery, veracity, and strength of character, but above all delves into the lengths a father will travel to in order to protect his family.
Depp plays an unemployed, alcoholic American Indian named Rapheal. He was recently released from gaol, and had returned to his family who reside in a shanty-town near a garbage heap.
His family is devastatingly stricken by poverty, to the extent that they're struggling to put food on the table.
Down on his luck and with little choice, Rapheal investigates a job prospect. At a grotty old warehouse he encounters an enigmatic and creepy cripple known as McCarthy Brando, in a very brief cameo appearance.
Rapheal is offered the chance to star in a snuff film. Thinking solely about his family, Rapheal agrees. From there the film chronicles Rapheal's final 7 days.
He reforms relationships with his two children and falls in love with his wife all over again. As Rapheal was given a bit of money upfront, he begins to give his family gifts to ensure he has a magnificent final week.
This intriguing premise of sacrifice is worked into a plot about prejudice, social injustice, human corruption and poverty.
To an extent his efforts pay off. However, with such a long running time and so little actually going on during these two long hours, the messages are weakened.
Johnny's directing and acting are fine by all accounts, but it's the writing that denotes the film's lethal fault. The middle of the film is overlong and narratively inept, with a deficiency of key plot points and general happenings.
Unfortunately a few of the stronger scenes are drawn out to abject monotony. It's also worth noting that the film never blatantly tells the viewer that Rapheal will be featured in a snuff film.
The best guess of a viewer will have to suffice. If a father allowed himself to be sacrificed in order for his family to live a better life, wouldn't they be mentally scarred for life?
However, this is a character flaw as opposed to script flaw. The character of Rapheal is meant to be so daft that he never considers the long-term except for the financial benefits.
It also shows Rapheal was willing to give up anything, even his own life, just to ensure his wife and kids could escape poverty.
The gripping conclusion depicts an unforgettable, symbolic and ambiguous final image. If you expected Rapheal to break out a gun and dispatch his enemies in slow motion before walking off into the sunset with his girl and his money, then you'll be disappointed.
Instead it stays true to its convictions from the first shot 'til the last. The anticlimactic finale will leave you stunned.
Johnny Depp's direction is first-rate. Depp keeps the pacing careful and ponderous, albeit slightly sluggish during the middle section.
For the most part I was riveted at the drama being offered. Authentic locations and sets are among the film's strengths. The final 5 minutes are particularly artistic.
It's clear Depp worked passionately both behind and in front of the camera. This leads to Merida conducting a beautiful speech which moves the hearts of the clans.
The clans agree, breaking tradition but renewing and strengthening their alliance. Merida sneaks into the tapestry room with Elinor.
Elinor, however, begins to slip in and out of her humanity and attacks Fergus, but suddenly regains her composure and flees the castle.
Mistaking the queen for Mor'du and unable to listen to Merida, Fergus pursues the bear with the other clans, locking Merida in the castle.
Merida escapes with the assistance of her brothers, who have also eaten the enchanted cake and have been transformed into bear cubs.
Merida repairs the tapestry and rides out after her father. Fergus and the clans capture Elinor, but Merida intervenes and stops her father before Mor'du arrives.
Mor'du batters the clan warriors and targets Merida, but Elinor intercedes, holding off Mor'du and causing him to be crushed by a falling menhir.
This releases the spirit of the prince, who silently thanks Merida for freeing him. Merida covers her mother in the repaired tapestry, but she remains a bear.
As the sun rises for the second time, Merida realizes the mistakes she has made and reconciles with Elinor, unknowingly fulfilling the true meaning of the witch's message; to mend the bond between her and her mother, therefore successfully reversing the spell's effects on her mother and brothers.
With Mor'du gone, Merida and Elinor work together on a new tapestry when they are called to the docks to bid farewell to the other clans, and ride their horses together.
Brave is the first Pixar film starring a female protagonist. She was getting her Scottish accent down, she was working very hard and it was sounding great but as we were continuing with the movie she had other movies lining up, so unfortunately we were unable to continue with her and had to get a replacement.
The orchestra was conducted by James Shearman. Doyle also composed several songs for the film. The lullaby duet between characters Princess Merida and Queen Elinor entitled "A Mhaighdean Uasal Bhan Noble Maiden Fair " appears on three occasions in different variations within the fabric of the score, and uniquely includes Gaelic vocals by Emma Thompson and Peigi Barker, the first Disney film with music featuring the language.
Scots being a Germanic language, while Scottish Gaelic is Celtic. These two tracks were produced by composer and arranger Jim Sutherland, who is also featured as a performer.
Along with introducing Doyle to a number of specialist Celtic musicians who feature in the score, Sutherland was responsible for discovering the young Gaelic singer Peigi Barker; the voice of Young Merida.
Pixar created three original tartan patterns for the film for three of the four clans — DunBroch, Dingwall, and MacGuffin.
Clan Macintosh wears a red tartan similar to the nonfictional Clan Mackintosh. The tartan consists of ocean blue for the North Sea , subdued scarlet for bloodshed during the clan wars, deep green for the Scottish Highlands , navy blue for the eventual unity of the four clans, and gray for the Scottish people.
In selecting the color scheme, Pixar took historical considerations, stating that "[t]here was a concerted effort to use hues that were indicative of the less saturated dyeing techniques [used] during the ancient period in which the fantasy film is set.
The registration was celebrated at the film's British premiere in Edinburgh , where Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond presented a certificate to director Mark Andrews.
However, Member of the Scottish Parliament Alex Johnstone criticized the registration as well as other fiction-based entries such as one for Peter Rabbit as "shallow and irreverent.
Johnstone contended that the legislation that created The Scottish Register of Tartans was intended to prevent such entries and protect Scotland's heritage.
The registration was not the first for Disney; the company also registered a tartan pattern for the Clan McDuck in The film was initially set for release on June 15, , but the date was later changed to June 22, In total, it was released in 4, theaters, a record-high for Pixar.
The previous record was held by Cars 2 4, theaters. Brave was released on 4K Blu-ray on September 10, In total earnings, its highest-grossing countries were the U.
The site's critical consensus reads: " Brave offers young audiences and fairy tale fans a rousing, funny fantasy adventure with a distaff twist and surprising depth.
Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times , in his final review on an animated film, gave the film 3 out of 4 stars.
He wrote, "The good news is that the kids will probably love it, and the bad news is that parents will be disappointed if they're hoping for another Pixar groundbreaker.
Debruge said that "adding a female director, Brenda Chapman , to its creative boys' club, the studio Pixar has fashioned a resonant tribute to mother-daughter relationships that packs a level of poignancy on par with such beloved male-bonding classics as Finding Nemo ".
Conversely, Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter gave it a negative review, stating that the film "diminishes into a rather wee thing as it chugs along, with climactic drama that is both too conveniently wrapped up and hinges on magical elements that are somewhat confusing to boot".
Some reviewers saw the Merida character as a novel break from the traditional line of Disney princesses.
There were some dissonance and criticism among viewers and organized feminists when her character was scheduled to be "crowned" a Disney princess, only for artists to render her thinner, with less frizzy hair, and rounder eyes, more like the other princesses from previous Disney movies.
This inspired girl-empowerment website A Mighty Girl to file a petition that Disney not alter their character. Scottish publication The Scotsman asked director Mark Andrews about the possibility of a sequel.
Andrews said:. I don't know if there will be another one. We never make a film at Pixar to have a sequel. It is always nice when you do and we kind of have a philosophy that if we find the right story then we will.
Surely the marketing and success of Brave says that you can have one and they will come. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This article is about the film.
