Will Self. A numbingly reliable tick-tock of expository set pieces alternating with vast CGI-aided battle scenes. Jessica Winter.

Wooden horse, wooden acting, wouldn't bother if I were you. Jonathan Romney. A fairly routine action picture with an advanced case of grandeuritis.

The real problem with Petersen and Benioff's reductive ideological updating of the epic story they tell is organic, not pedantic: the "realism" they've opted for goes against the grain of the genre they're working in.

Achilles, who strongly dislikes Agamemnon, eventually decides to go after his mother Thetis tells him that though he will die, he will be forever glorified.

In Troy, King Priam is dismayed when Hector and Paris introduce Helen, but welcomes her and decides to prepare for war.

The Greeks eventually invade and take the Trojan beach, thanks largely to Achilles and his Myrmidons. Achilles has the temple of Apollo sacked, and had a brief fight with Hector and his army.

They claim Briseis — a priestess and the cousin of Paris and Hector — as a prisoner afterwards. He is angered when Agamemnon spitefully takes her from him, and decides that he will not aid Agamemnon in the siege.

The Trojan and Greek armies meet outside the walls of Troy; during a parley, Paris offers to duel Menelaus personally for Helen's hand in exchange for the city being spared.

Agamemnon, intending to take the city regardless of the outcome, accepts. Menelaus wounds Paris, causing him to cower at the foot of Hector.

When Menelaus attempts to kill Paris despite his victory, he himself is killed by Hector. In the ensuing battle, Hector kills Ajax after a brief duel and many Greek soldiers fall to the Trojan defenses with Achilles and the myrmidons watch from a distance during the battle.

On Odysseus' insistence, Agamemnon gives the order to fall back. In the camp after Ajax and Menelaus were cremated, Agamemnon and Odysseus argued on why they lost the battle.

He gives Briseis to the Greek soldiers for their amusement, but Achilles saves her from them. Later that night, Briseis sneaks into Achilles' quarters to kill him; instead, she falls for him and they become lovers.

Despite Hector's objections, Priam orders him to retake the Trojan beach by daybreak and force the Greeks home; the attack unifies the Greeks and the Myrmidons enter the battle.

Hector duels a man he believes to be Achilles and kills him, only to discover it was actually his cousin Patroclus.

Distraught, both armies agree to stop fighting for the day. Achilles is informed of his cousin's death by Eudorus and vows revenge after striking Eudorus.

Wary that Achilles will surely seek Vengeance, Hector shows his wife Andromache a secret tunnel beneath Troy; should he die and the city fall, he instructs her to take their child and any survivors out of the city to Mount Ida.

The next day, Achilles arrives outside Troy and challenges Hector. Hector says his goodbyes to his loved ones, including his wife and son.

The two duel outside the gates and initially appear evenly matched, but Hector is slowly worn down until Achilles lands the killing blow.

Achilles then drags his corpse back to the Trojan beach. Priam, in disguise, sneaks into the camp and implores Achilles to return Hector's body for a proper funeral.

Ashamed of his actions, Achilles agrees and also states that Hector was the best he had ever fought. He allows Briseis to return to Troy with Priam, promising a twelve-day truce so that Hector's funeral rites may be held in peace.

He also orders his men to return home without him after apologizing to Eudorus for striking him. Agamemnon declares that he will take Troy regardless of the cost.

Concerned, Odysseus concocts a plan to infiltrate the city. After seeing a carving of a horse by a Greek soldier, he has the Greeks build a gigantic wooden horse as a peace offering and abandon the Trojan beach, hiding their ships in a nearby cove.

Despite objections from Paris who requests for it to be burned down, Priam orders the horse be brought into the city after Archeptolemus views it as a gift intended for calming the gods.

A Trojan scout later finds the Greek ships hiding in the cove, but he was quickly shot down as he was about to alert the city. That night, Greeks hiding inside the horse emerge, attacking the sleeping Trojans by surprise and open the city gates for the Greek army, commencing the Sack of Troy.

While Andromache and Helen guide the Trojans to safety through the tunnel, Paris gives the Sword of Troy to a young boy named Aeneas , instructing him to protect the Trojans and find them a new home.

Agamemnon kills Priam and captures Briseis, who then kills Agamemnon using a concealed knife in her hand. Achilles fights his way through the city and reunites with Briseis after killing the two Greek soldiers.

Paris, seeking to avenge his brother, shoots an arrow through Achilles' heel and then several into his body. Achilles extracts all the arrows but the one in his heel.

He then bids farewell to Briseis, and watches her flee with Paris before dying. I am wondering if the character of Achilles inspired all of the wartime cliches or Troy just decided to make Achilles sort of similar to Captain Benjamin L.

Willard in Apocalypse Now. What is known is that Achilles is a great fighter, when he wants to be, and literally allows armies of his fellow countrymen to get slaughtered because him and Agamemnon are squabbling.

On the other side of Helms Deep is Paris, who has shown himself to be the weakest person next to the guy whose wife he stole. Helen is no better, as this little love plan has fucked everything up and no one seems to be very happy with the decision.

Maybe there should be gods here. Someone needs show a little courage and be a real man or woman in this story. The main conflict in Troy comes between Hector and Achilles, who are at loggerheads because they are great warriors.

Hector, while having less power than Achilles has a family and reasons not to mope like a sad sort who just got dumped on prom night.

What in the fuck did you think was going to happen? Achilles rages understandably if the film allowed them to be lovers as some history has suggested and then drags the corpse of Hector around the battlefield after besting him for all of Troy to see.

In terms of cinematic entertainment. Troy holds up surprisingly well for many reasons. First of all, ten years in terms of CGI is enough time to make things look weird, ragged, and rough.

The special effects for Troy, from the crowd renderings to the world construction, are still believable and possibly breathtaking.

Add to this a focused attention paid to combat fighting and one has a recipe for an engaging war film.

The choice to leave gods out of it and let humans act like shitty assholes was the right choice as deities do not need to be around for everything to go completely wrong.

With that said, Troy is not without its flaws. Was true love worth it? No, not really. Everyone is worse off.

The ship continues to Troy. Menelaus, having discovered his wife's flight, has approached his brother for help.

He convinces Agamemnon to attack Troy, Agamemnon agrees because he sees this as an opportunity to control shipping in the Aegean by destroying the most important city on the coast of Asia Minor.

Agamemnon commands the Greek kings to assemble their forces but Nestor notes that Troy has never fallen before and convinces him that they need Achilles.

Odysseus , king of Ithaca , is sent to Phthia to convince Achilles to join Agamemnon. While there, he meets Patroclus , Achilles' cousin and student.

Achilles also meets his mother Thetis , who warns him that if he remains he will live a long happy life but will not be remembered.

If he goes to Troy, he will find everlasting glory and renown but will die. Wanting to be remembered, Achilles chooses to go to Troy, summoning his Myrmidons, including Patroclus.

Hector, Paris arrive in Troy, where they are greeted by their father, King Priam and their cousin Briseis. Priam is disappointed in Paris' actions but accepts Helen nonetheless.

Helen warns Paris that Agamemnon and Menelaus will come for her, but Paris intends to challenge Menelaus to single combat. The combined Greek forces arrive the next day, with the Myrmidons taking the beach of Troy and desecrating the temple to Apollo.

During this act of sacrilege, Achilles has Apollo's priests killed and takes Briseis, an acolyte in the temple, as his prisoner. Agamemnon, hearing of Achilles' prize, takes her for himself, angering Achilles, who forces his troops to stay out of the war.

The Greek and Trojan armies assemble outside Troy and Paris challenges Menelaus to single combat during a truce.

Although having never been in battle, Paris is confident and uses the sword of Troy, a legendary sword used by Priam and his ancestors.

Hector advises Paris to defend himself so that Menelaus will tire himself out, but Menelaus is able to remove Paris' shield and cut his thigh, leaving the Trojan prince to limp to his brother.

Menelaus and Agamemnon fail to persuade Hector to leave Paris on the field of battle and Agamemnon claims the truce has been violated.

Menelaus is killed by Hector after attempting to kill Paris, who is clinging to the feet of Hector. Agamemnon orders the Greeks to attack but they are pushed back by Trojan soldiers on the ground and archers atop the walls.

During this time, Ajax the Greater is slain by Hector. Achilles watches Agamemnon retreat and does not intervene, to the dismay of Patroclus.

The Greek forces retreat to the ships and the Trojan forces are pulled back by Hector, seeig that they are within range of Greek archers.

Nestor and Odysseus persuade Agamemnon to make amends with Achilles. Achilles taunts Briseis because of her loyalty to Apollo and Briseis question's Achilles' morals and questions why he wants to be a great warrior.

She attempts to kill him during the night, but realises that she loves him and so refrains. In Troy, Priam has assembled his councilors, who advocate attacking the Greeks while they are disadvantaged.

Hector, however, notes that the Myrmidons did not fight, surmising that there is dissension within the Greek army. He believes that fighting them now would unite them.

Priam orders an attack at daybreak. The Trojan archers use flaming arrows on the ground, lighting small fires.

They then roll large balls of over the hill that the Greeks have built. These then burst into flame when they hit the flame, causing havoc in the Greek camp.

Odysseus and Achilles organise a resistance but Hector and the Trojans charge into the camp. During the fight, Achilles is slain by Hector, who removes the helmet of the dying man.

The night before, Hector showed Andromache a secret tunnel out of Troy, telling her that if he falls, she must rescue as many Trojans as she can and lead them through the tunnel.

Hector realises that Achilles will seek him out personally, to avenge Patroclus. Achilles, meanwhile, prepares to fight Hector, although Briseis begs him not to fight her cousin as he is a good man.

The one with Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom? Troy was directed by Wolfgang Peterson, whose vision birthed films like Das Boot into cinematic history and others like In the Line of Fire and Outbreak, as ones barely remembered.

Okay, time for a history lesson. Well, sort of. The Trojan War was a conflict between the nation of Greece and the nation of Troy, which is modern day Turkey.

The conflict was started after Helen of Sparta was taken by Paris of Troy to be his new wife. The war served as a major event in Greek mythology as most accounts of it are mired in legend, with major deities playing decisive roles in the outcome of events.

Stop fucking around with the humans, sheesh. Troy, the film, took an interesting angle by leaving all of that godly nonsense out. Troy wanted to present the facts of the Trojan War in the most sober way possible.

Hector, played by Eric Bana and Paris, played by Orlando Bloom, are sent to Sparta to negotiate a deal that would end a long, bloody feud between Sparta and Troy.

Sounds good. People may recognize Agamemnon as the center of a trilogy of tragedies that see terrible things befall his family following this war.

Agamemnon has his own personal warrior Achilles, played by Brad Pitt, who is really just a big whiny kid who knows how to kill really well.

This is sort of not fair as his mother was a sea nymph and daughter to some obscure sea god. Achilles is sort of a sleeper demigod with the weight of the world upon his chiseled back.

Watching Troy ten years later reveals how the careers of the major players has panned out. Orlando Bloom was also experiencing massive stardom after just appearing three years earlier with the first Lord of the Rings trilogy followed by the first of 20 Pirates of the Caribbean films.

Take these two stars and compare them to, Diane Kruger, playing Helen, whose career slowly unraveled into television in the next decade.

Add to this the odd angles of Sean Bean, Brian Cox, and Eric Bana and one has an ensemble film with a cast of people either coming or going.

Yes, long before , men making strategic turtle shell formations was taking place. Troy mostly centers around the bruising exploits of Achilles, who is trying to find himself in the hell of war.

I am wondering if the character of Achilles inspired all of the wartime cliches or Troy just decided to make Achilles sort of similar to Captain Benjamin L.
