Throughout, Keaton keeps making lines that should've been dead on arrival pulse with life by inserting surprising pauses into his responses to questions and glancing furtively at people and objects, so that you keep wondering if Stan knows a secret.
Maybe he does know a secret: that "American Assassin" is not what it pretends to be, and both he and the audience will have a more satisfying experience if he pretends he's in the movie that should've been.

Dylan O'Brien is pretty solid as the lead and Michael Keaton is excellent as a CIA instructor who's haunted by a former student turned rogue terrorist played by Taylor Kitsch.
And the fight choreography and stunt work is really well-done. The plot however, is pretty formulaic and hits a lot of the usual spy tropes.

It's tremendous, this guy's charts. Believe me, you've never seen charts like this man has. You're going to see his charts and say, "Wow, those are some of the best charts I've ever seen.
But of course, Keaton warns him the whole time to "never make it personal", which both he and O'Brien fail to do all throughout the film.
